Stay Cool in the Sun with Freshwater Freddie!

Posted by: Freshwater Freddie on June 26th, 2008

Hi there! Freshwater Freddie here again with some tips on how to keep safe in the summer sun. Whether you’re playing baseball in the park or swimming at the lake, remember to take precautions against too much sun.

If you have ever had a sunburn, you know that too much sun can damage your skin. Sunlight gives off harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can hurt your skin and eyes, and also weaken your immune system.  Some people think that staying in the shade protects you from the sun’s harmful rays but the rays can reflect off of the water and still sunburn your skin. Remember, whenever you are around the water, apply your SPF lotion to protect your skin and still have fun!

During the summertime, as you can see, the UV index is at its highest. The good news is that you can protect yourself if you follow a few of my easy steps!

To protect your skin, make sure to put on sunscreen every time you go outside. You can also wear a hat to protect your face and sunglasses to protect your eyes. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, and try to stay in the shade when you’re playing outside.

Talk to your family about other ways you can protect yourself from the harmful effects of summer sunlight. Remember – for fun in the sun, safety comes first!

Posted by: Freshwater Freddie on April 8th, 2008

On April 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day to remind ourselves to take care of our planet, especially our rivers, lakes and streams. Earth Day was started in 1970 as a special way to educate us all on ways to help the environment. Check out the tips below so you can learn more to help celebrate our Earth everyday!

Here are some simple things that you can do:

  • Participate in River Sweeps to keep our water litter-free.
  • Don’t pour household cleaners, motor oil or other hazardous materials down the drain.
  • Make sure you turn the light off when you leave a room. It saves energy and keeps your room cooler, which is nice during the spring and summer!
  • Take a lunch box to school instead if a paper bag to save some trees.
  • Pick up litter you see in your neighborhood or school. It helps preserve nature and keeps your community looking beautiful!
  • Walk or ride your bike instead of riding in a car to reduce pollution.
  • Don’t leave the water running while you brush your teeth, and use less water in your bath or shower.
  • Write or draw on both sides of a piece of paper.

Here are some things you can do with your family:

  • Reuse cloth shopping bags at the store.
  • Recycle are your cans, bottles, newspapers and cardboard boxes.
  • Try carpooling with a friend whenever you can.
